5 Things to Teach Your Kids About the Presidential Election

If there is ever a time every four years that we easily forget who is in control and forget we are commanded to conduct ourselves in a God honoring way, it is Presidential election season. You’ve seen it, the Facebook and Twitter updates from people saying things that left you scratching your head wondering if they forgot their a Christian first, an American second. As parents, it’s easy to get caught up in all this stuff and forget you have children watching you. Their watching the way you react to our current President and watching what you say. Even though it’s a crazy season, remember God expects you to train your child and help them understanding the Presidential debate in light of who He is and what He has said in His Word.

My first Chris Sprad, over at EpicParent.tv, wrote a great post on five things you need to teach your kids about the 2012 Presidential election. I want to share part his thoughts with you and encourage you to teach your kids what it’s important throughout this election.

VOTE UP OR SHUT UP. I was actually considering not voting this year.  To be honest, I’m just not all that pleased with either of our choices.  I personally would like to see Ross Perot throw his hat back in the Presidential race or maybe Will Ferrell. Anyway…how UN American is that?  Step into the pain, teach your kiddos to VOTE UP OR SHUT UP.

GOD CREATED GOVERNMENT. Your kiddos need to understand that God created government for a purpose and that God allows/places leaders in power. The Bible story of Saul being made king is a good example. Saul was a wicked king, he still did a lot of good, and he was still placed in power by God.  Romans 13:1 (NLT) says, “Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.”

HONOR THE PRESIDENT. We should teach our kiddos that no matter who wins the election…the Bible tells us to honor our leaders.

CRAZY MATH FACT. The Center For Responsive Politics has estimated that the total cost of Presidential campaigns will be in the 5.8 billion range.  It would only cost 10 billion a year to end hunger in The United States.

THE KING. Whoever wins the election, Jesus is always King.

I would encourage you to take a minute to read the entire post over at EpicParent.tv as well as check out some of their other great content. As parents, use this election to teach your children how to be Christ-like and how to view it in light of Scripture.
