In late July homosexual couples will be able to marry in the state of New York because they just passed a bill allowing same-sex marriages in their state. What is so significant about New York passing this is because they are the largest state to do so. There are plenty of articles and reports on it, but one I found interesting can be read here.
This morning I was driving to the office and was listening to the local Christian radio station here in York. In between some songs they had a news break and the IRN USA Radio News was talking about the New York situation. I was not really listening too closely, but I heard something that got my attention and made me start to think. They reported that one of the main leaders supporting the New York same-sex marriage bill said, “We will seek to redefine marriage and family.” Let that sink in, he said, “We will seek to REDEFINE marriage and family.”
When I got into the office I googled the New York same-sex marriage bill and was reading the article I was talking about at the beginning of this post. I was extremely encouraged when I heard that there was actually someone who stood up against this bill and really stood up for God. A Democratic senator, yes it was a Democrat who stood up against this bill so Republicans need to let that sink in, named Rubén Díaz Sr. of the Bronx. He didn’t say much, but what he did say was powerful. He said, “God, not Albany, has settled the definition of marriage, a long time ago.” Wow, what a strong and true statement. As state after state is trying to redefine marriage by allowing same-sex marriage we need to remember that is something we have no authority to redefine, God has already defined it from the beginning of creation. Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” In Genesis 2:18-25 the Bible talks about how it was not good for man, Adam, to be alone so God created him a partner, Eve. The Bible goes on to say very clearly that “…a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” It is clear the Biblical model and way God intended marriage to be done is between one man and one woman. Here is a helpful little article that supports this Biblical model.
I know I am only a 22-year-old Bible college student, but I do know that when humans start to “redefine” something God has already defined that is dangerous. It is easy for us as Bible believing Christians to look at the New York situation and point our fingers at them and say they are in a dangerous spot because they are seeking to redefine marriage and family. But this is what I been thinking about since I heard that statement. How many times do we as Bible believing Christians try to redefine what God has already defined. God has laid out our purpose for being on this earth and has laid out clearly in His Word how we should life, but when we live for another purpose or in a way that is not His way all we are really doing is redefining what God has already defined. I don’t know what that looks like in your life, but I know there are areas in my life I try to redefine what God has already defined. So like Rubén Díaz said, “God, not Albany, has settled the definition of marriage…” and I want us to remember that God has defined many other things and we have no authority to redefine them, but to humbly submit to them and live by them.
