James 1:2-8 (NASB) “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trails, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.”
I love these verses! I read over them again last night and took a few minutes between each verse praying about what each verse said. It was amazing of just how many little truths are found in these vereses. I would like to just highlight a few that stuck out to me last night and hope they will be a blessing to you.
First, James tells us to consider it a joy when we face trails. Wow, this is a hard one! Out of the million times I have read this verse, it really becomes real when you are actually going through a trail in your own life. Thats me. I am currently going through a trail in my life that is really hard and I am having to hold to God with everything I am while going through this hard trail. But this verse tells me and you to consider it a JOY when we go through trails like I am currently going through. I had to stop and pray about this one for awhile because honestly I can’t consider it a joy when I face a trail. And to be honest, you can’t eaither. It’s only with the help of the Holy Spirit that indwells us believers that we can face trails with joy. James gives us a reason why we can face these trails with joy and that reason is found in the next few truths.
Secondly, when we go through trails, it produces endurance. Endurance is what every Christian needs. We are living in a world that is full of sin and evil. We Christians, are being attacked from every angle and our beliefes and values are being attacked also. There may very well be a day in the future, for us American Christians, that are faith will be attacked more extremely and real persucution will be something we may have to face. That is why we need endurance. Because we have a glorious home waiting for us after this life, but we need endurance to get through this life. That is why we can count it a joy when we face trails because those trails produce in us endurance and like I stated earlier, we need endurance.
Thridly, endurance always have a perfect result. I had to stop and think about this truth for awhile. I prayed about it and I feel like God put something on my heart about what this truth is saying. It seems to say that endurance has a perfect result. The more I think about it, the more it becomes real to me. We know that God always has a reason for even the hard trails we face. God puts us through these trails for a reason. He puts us through trails to change us, mold us, moves us, correct us, and like all these things, they are a result. God has a perfect result for every trail we go through!
Fourthly, if we lack wisdom, ask God!This one is pretty bold and easy to understand, but we as Christians always seem to forget it or skip right by the applying of this truth. God Word tells us right here in James that if any man lacks wisdom, ask God and He will give that man wisdom! Ryrie says, “God gives wisdom abundantly and graciously when we ask.” That is the key though, when we ask! God wants to give each of us wisdom when we face trails, but we must come to Him and ask Him first!
